Behind the scenes at Kylie Cakes

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a whole team and collaboration of passionate vendors to make a wedding possible.   Choosing the right vendor to suit you is more important than ever.  With brides stepping out of the box, they need to find the vendors who are ready to step out with them.   The choices of flowers and cakes are endless out there but I love it when a bride and vendor sit down to create something really unique together.

Over the years of photographing weddings, my appreciation for fellow vendors has continued to grow.  When photographing the details, from the flowers to the stationary, I always think about the bride’s vision when planning, and the work and hours that the designer has put in to make those visions come to life, and aim to photograph it to do it justice.

This week I spent the morning with Kylie from Kylie Cakes to get a glimpse of the work the goes into each cake masterpiece.  Kylie can multi task, that’s for sure! Needing to juggle a couple of orders while cakes cooled and fondants set, she was baking up a storm!   Who knew there was an ideal time of day to work with fondant! I watched in awe as Kylie layered a cake, covered it in fondant, created some delicate flowers and whipped up a bride and groom.  It was like magic, if I blinked, I would have missed it.  She worked with such speed, precision and passion and knows all the tricks of the trade.  From traditional to quirky cakes, Kylie is in her element when she has the opportunity to custom design a wedding cake to suit your taste and style. She excels in personalizing bride and groom cake toppers to mimic you and your hubby to be.

And as if that wasn’t enough, located in her garden outside the kitchen is her chicken pen where her daughter will collect the fresh eggs daily for Kylie’s baking.  I was lucky enough to be sent home with some delicious cake tastings and a carton of huge fresh eggs. There is no better way to edit cake photos than sitting eating cake, the mars bar mud cake is to dye for! Yum!
